Why height needs converting in a biodata

In India, most families talk about height in feet and inches ("she is 5' 4""), while doctors' reports, passports and many matrimonial forms use centimetres. A biodata that shows both avoids confusion: a family abroad or a younger reader thinks in centimetres, grandparents think in feet. Writing both also shows care, and it stops the classic mistake of writing 5.4 feet when you mean 5 feet 4 inches (5.4 feet is actually about 5' 5").

How to use the height converter

How the conversion works

The maths is exact and simple. One inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimetres, and one foot is 12 inches.

  • Feet and inches to cm: (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54
  • cm to feet and inches: cm ÷ 2.54 gives total inches; divide by 12 for feet, and the remainder is inches.
  • cm to metres: divide by 100.

For the biodata line the tool rounds to the nearest whole inch and the nearest whole centimetre, because that is how height is normally written. Rounding is done on the total inches first, so a height like 182.8 cm shows as 6' 0", never as the odd-looking 5' 12". If you typed centimetres yourself, your own figure is kept in the brackets.

Worked example

Say the measuring tape at the clinic read 163 cm.

  1. 163 ÷ 2.54 = 64.17 inches.
  2. Rounded to the nearest inch: 64 inches.
  3. 64 ÷ 12 = 5 feet, with 4 inches left over.

So you write 5' 4" (163 cm). Going the other way, 5' 4" is 64 × 2.54 = 162.56 cm, which also rounds to 163 cm.

Tips for writing height in a biodata

  • Measure without footwear, standing straight against a wall. Heights "with heels" cause awkward moments later.
  • Don't round up. If you are 5' 3½", write 5' 3" or 5' 4" honestly; families usually meet in person anyway.
